Media Xperiments www.MediaXperiments.com is a think tank and social web portal for students, media professionals, educators and business leaders to develop new models of engagement. Through a combination of competitions, tours, workshops and portfolio development opportunities, students are able to transition from passive consumers to active producers of media. Media Xperiments is a program of the Media Diversity Council, (MDC) a non-profit organization that is umbrellaed by the National Diversity Council.
With on-going dramatic shifts in demographic and cultural trends, the Media Diversity Council (MDC) believes that a more inclusive media/communication workforce benefits its members by making their messages more relevant and ultimately, their businesses more profitable. Media, which now encompasses everything from broadcast, communication, pr, and advertising to the Internet, video games and music, plays a powerful role in shaping the perceptions of diverse communities. Recognizing this power, the MDC serves as a coordinating body for more targeted media related service organizations, industry leaders, businesses, and educational institutions to create better models for engaging diverse populations. |

Well, it's March and spring is upon us. The Media Diversity Council has come a long way in the last two years. We now serve almost 500 students and professionals across Texas and next Tuesday will be our second annual Show Your Reel Portfolio Awards at GSD&M Idea City. Students have attended our free tours of media companies and submitted their portfolios to be reviewed by professionals. We’ll recognize the best work and award our first cash scholarship.
As with last year’s Show Your Reel finalists, students are eligible to become Media Protégés and participate in job shadow activities, service learning projects and internships. The video posted here is of Media Protégé Gabriel Leal on a job serving as the producer and video tech. Media Protégés broadcasted a live webcast to thousands of students across Texas from the George Bush Presidential Library & Museum in College Station on The Life of a Buffalo Soldier. .
I'm proud to be a part of the RISE Austin Multicultural Series going on this week. My friend, Mr. Donnell Creech over at Soul Citi put together this guide for African American presenters at the conference. RISE is a free event with wealth of networking and informational opportunities. I highly encourage you to check it out.
I'll also be webcasting my presentation Media Incubator 2.0: Creating the Next Generation of Diverse Media Professionals noon to 1:30pm Tuesday at the Ronald McDonald House on Media Xperiments. Hope to see you there!
