| Educational Outreach: Xponential Mentoring Xponential Mentoring is an engagement model that uses hands on tours, on-line resources, competition and internships to 1) expose large numbers of underserved students to professional careers, entrepreneurship and STEM related fields 2) identify those students that exhibit aptitude and 3) provide them with the resources they need to flourish. The first implementation the Xponential Mentoring model is Media Xperiments, a think tank and social networking web portal that connects media communications professionals, educators, students, and business leaders. The focus is on developing new models of education, engagement and economic development for minorities and women across the United States through grass roots discussion and action. Currently, Media Xperiments has been implemented in Austin, TX with the cities of San Antonio, Houston and Dallas to follow. A key component to being successful in the creative world of media is developing and maintaining a good portfolio. A portfolio can be printed and/or electronic examples of your work that help potential employers or business partners understand the range of your talent and skills. The Industry Tour & Show Your Reel Contest allow students to visit a variety of media related facilities and interact directly with media professionals while they work to develop their own professional portfolios. At the end of the tour series, students will have their portfolios evaluated by local media experts with a select few qualifying to be Media Proteges. |

Well, it's March and spring is upon us. The Media Diversity Council has come a long way in the last two years. We now serve almost 500 students and professionals across Texas and next Tuesday will be our second annual Show Your Reel Portfolio Awards at GSD&M Idea City. Students have attended our free tours of media companies and submitted their portfolios to be reviewed by professionals. We’ll recognize the best work and award our first cash scholarship.
As with last year’s Show Your Reel finalists, students are eligible to become Media Protégés and participate in job shadow activities, service learning projects and internships. The video posted here is of Media Protégé Gabriel Leal on a job serving as the producer and video tech. Media Protégés broadcasted a live webcast to thousands of students across Texas from the George Bush Presidential Library & Museum in College Station on The Life of a Buffalo Soldier. .
I'm proud to be a part of the RISE Austin Multicultural Series going on this week. My friend, Mr. Donnell Creech over at Soul Citi put together this guide for African American presenters at the conference. RISE is a free event with wealth of networking and informational opportunities. I highly encourage you to check it out.
I'll also be webcasting my presentation Media Incubator 2.0: Creating the Next Generation of Diverse Media Professionals noon to 1:30pm Tuesday at the Ronald McDonald House on Media Xperiments. Hope to see you there!
